Every month the sky gives you a quiet reset. The new moon is the night the moon disappears from view, and for thousands of years people have used that darkness as a time to plant intentions for the cycle ahead.

This guide gives you a complete new moon ritual, step by step. You will learn when to do it, what you need (very little), how to write intentions that actually guide you, and what to do in the weeks that follow so the ritual turns into results.

A note on expectations. There is no scientific evidence that the moon phase changes what happens in your life. What the ritual gives you is structure: a regular date to get clear, write things down and recommit. That structure is where most people find the value, and results vary from person to person.

What the new moon means in this tradition

Astronomically, the new moon is the moment the moon sits between the earth and the sun, so the side facing us is unlit and the sky is darker than usual. Many spiritual traditions read that dark sky as a blank page. Farmers once planted by the lunar calendar, and the idea of "planting" carried over into intention-setting: the new moon is for seeds, the full moon is for harvest and letting go.

In modern manifestation practice, the new moon ritual is a monthly check-in with what you want. The exact ritual varies, but almost every version has the same four beats: clear the space, get quiet, write intentions, and close with gratitude. Everything below follows that shape.

When to do it

Find the date of the next new moon in any calendar app or weather app; most list moon phases. The traditional window runs from the exact new moon through the next two days, while the moon is still barely visible. If life gets in the way, doing the ritual a day or two late is far better than skipping the month.

Choose a time when you will not be interrupted for twenty to thirty minutes. Evening works well for most people because the day is done and the mind is quieter, but morning is fine too.

What you need

Keep it simple. You need a notebook or a few sheets of paper, a pen you like, and a comfortable place to sit. A candle is optional and traditional; if you use one, put it on a stable surface away from anything flammable and never leave it burning unattended. Some people add a glass of water, a crystal or a small object that represents their goal. Our guide to crystals for abundance has ideas if that appeals to you, but nothing on that list is required.

What you do not need is a perfect setup. The ritual is about your attention, not your decorations.

Writing intentions that guide you

This is the heart of the ritual, so it deserves a few guidelines.

Use the present tense. Write "I am building a steady income from work I enjoy" rather than "I want more money". The present tense trains you to see the goal as a direction you are already walking, not a wish hanging in the future.

Attach a feeling. Add why it matters: "I am building a steady income from work I enjoy, and I feel calm and proud when I check my accounts." The feeling is what you will actually recognize when things start to shift.

Be specific but not rigid. "A kind partner who shares my values" is specific. "A six-foot-tall partner named James" is rigid. Leave room for life to surprise you.

Keep the list short. Three to ten intentions is plenty. A list of thirty spreads your attention too thin to act on any of them.

Mix areas of life. Money, relationships, health habits, creativity and home all belong. If money is your focus, our beginner's guide to manifesting money helps you word financial intentions in a grounded way.

The ritual, explained

Here is what each phase does, so the steps in the exercise below make sense.

Clearing the space can be as simple as tidying the table and taking three slow breaths. The point is to signal to yourself that this time is different from the rest of the day.

Getting quiet means two to five minutes of sitting with your eyes closed, noticing your breath. If you are new to this, our manifestation meditation for beginners walks you through it.

Writing is the main event. Use the guidelines above. Many people like to date the page and write "New moon intentions" at the top so the pages are easy to find later.

Feeling it means reading each intention slowly and letting yourself imagine, for a moment, that it has already happened. Notice what it is like in your body.

Closing is a short thank you, to the universe, to God, to your future self, to whatever fits your beliefs. Then blow out the candle and put the page somewhere you will see it.

The two weeks after

The ritual plants the seed; the next fourteen days water it. Pick one intention each week and take one small action toward it. Reread the page every few mornings. When the full moon arrives, review what moved and what did not, and consider our full moon release ritual for letting go of whatever got in the way. Together the two rituals make a complete monthly rhythm.

Common mistakes

Treating the ritual as the work. Writing intentions is a start, not a finish. If you never act, the page stays a page.

Writing from lack. "I am no longer broke" keeps your mind on being broke. Write toward what you want instead.

Skipping the month because the setup is not perfect. A scrap of paper on a busy Tuesday counts.

Judging results too early. Many intentions take several cycles. Keep the pages and read them in three months; the progress is usually clearer in hindsight.

Try this

A 20-minute new moon ritual

  1. Tidy a small space, set out paper and pen, and light a candle if you are using one. Put your phone on silent.
  2. Sit comfortably and take ten slow breaths, letting each exhale be a little longer than the inhale.
  3. Write the date and "New moon intentions" at the top of the page.
  4. Write three to ten intentions in the present tense, each with a feeling attached.
  5. Read the list slowly, out loud if you can. After each line, pause and imagine it as already true.
  6. Write one small action you can take this week for your top intention.
  7. Say a short thank you in your own words, blow out the candle and place the page where you will see it daily.
  8. Set a reminder for the next full moon to review the list.

Keep going

A new moon ritual is a monthly appointment with your own clarity. Keep it short, keep it honest, and let the small actions in the weeks after carry the weight.

Questions people ask

Does the new moon really affect manifestation?

There is no scientific evidence that the moon phase changes your results. The value is in the regular rhythm: a fixed date to get clear, write and recommit. Many people find that structure makes them far more consistent.

What if I miss the exact new moon?

Do the ritual within the next two or three days, or whenever you can. A late ritual is far better than a skipped month, and the intentions you write matter more than the hour you write them.

Should I write money intentions and relationship intentions on the same night?

Yes, if both matter to you. Keep the total list short so each intention gets real attention in the weeks after. Some people choose one theme per month, which is also fine.

What do I do with old intention pages?

Keep them in one notebook or folder. Reading pages from three or six months ago is one of the most encouraging parts of the practice because progress is easier to see from a distance.

We write about manifestation the way we would explain it to a friend: what the tradition says, what is actually known, and what to try tonight. No invented studies, no success stories we cannot verify, no promises.

Manifestation is a mindset practice, not a guarantee. Results vary from person to person and depend on what you actually do next. Nothing here is medical, psychological or financial advice. See the disclaimer.
